XPE vs TPE Floor Mats: Which Is Better for Your EV?

by OZ EV Gear 11 Jul 2026
XPE Floor Mat

Short answer: XPE and TPE are both waterproof, custom-fit floor mat materials that beat generic rubber or carpet mats for interior protection — and neither is simply “better.” TPE is a heavier, rubber-like material prized for being hard-wearing; XPE is a lightweight layered foam that's cushioned, warm and quiet underfoot. The good news: with our mats you don't have to choose. Every OZ EV Gear floor mat uses a composite construction — a hard-wearing TPE top surface over a cushioned XPE core, on an anti-slip base — so you get the durability of TPE with the comfort and light weight of XPE in one custom-fit mat.

What is XPE?

XPE (cross-linked polyethylene) is a lightweight closed-cell foam built up in layers. It's light, comfortable and quiet underfoot, warm in winter, completely waterproof, odourless and easy to lift out and hose down. Its one limitation on its own is surface toughness — a bare foam top can scuff where shoes twist and grind.

What is TPE?

TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is a flexible, rubber-like material. It's heavier and denser than XPE, with a firmer feel and excellent resistance to abrasion, oils and heavy loads. TPE resists compression over time and holds up well under boots, tools and repeated heavy use — which is why it's often considered the more premium, longer-lasting surface. On its own it's heavier to lift and firmer (less cushioned and warm) underfoot.

Why choose when you can have both?

Rather than pick one material and live with its trade-off, our mats layer them. A hard-wearing TPE top surface takes the scuffs and abrasion right where your shoes land. A cushioned XPE core keeps the cabin quiet, warm and light underfoot. A firm anti-slip base grips the floor so the mat stays put. You get the toughness of TPE and the comfort of XPE together — flat and planted under braking, with none of the sliding, curling or hollow rattle of cheap single-layer rubber.

XPE vs TPE: head to head

  • Weight: XPE is noticeably lighter; TPE is heavier and denser.
  • Feel underfoot: XPE is cushioned and warm; TPE is firmer and more rubber-like.
  • Durability: Both last for years; TPE is more resistant to heavy abrasion, oils and compression — which is exactly why we use it for the wear layer.
  • Waterproofing: Both are fully waterproof with raised edges to trap spills.
  • Odour: Quality XPE is odourless; some TPE can have a faint rubber smell when new.
  • Price: Driven more by thickness and construction than by the material itself — a thick, multi-layer mat costs more than a thin one.

Which should you choose?

For the vast majority of EV and SUV owners — daily commuting, family duties, the occasional beach or campsite — the ideal mat gives you both toughness and comfort without compromise. That's why our mats combine a hard-wearing TPE top over a cushioned XPE core rather than asking you to trade one for the other. Whichever model you drive, the single most important factor is that the mat is custom-fit to your exact make, model and year, so it sits flush and doesn't slide.

Frequently asked questions

Are XPE floor mats good for EVs?

Yes — the cushioned XPE core is lightweight, waterproof and quiet, which makes it a comfortable everyday match for EVs, while the TPE top adds hard-wearing surface durability. Our EV mats are 3D-scanned to each model for a precise fit.

Do XPE mats smell?

Quality XPE is odourless. If a mat arrives folded, laying it flat in a warm room for a few hours lets it relax fully into shape.

Is TPE better than XPE?

Not universally — each has strengths. TPE is heavier and more hard-wearing, with better resistance to abrasion, oils and compression; XPE is lighter, cushioned and warmer underfoot. You don't have to pick between them: our mats layer a hard-wearing TPE top over a cushioned XPE core, so you get the durability of one and the comfort of the other in a single custom-fit mat.

What are your floor mats made of?

A triple-layer composite: a hard-wearing TPE top surface, a cushioned XPE core, and a firm anti-slip base. Every set is fully waterproof, odourless and 3D-laser-scanned to a specific make, model and year.

Are your floor mats custom-fit?

Yes. Every set is 3D-laser-scanned and made for a specific make, model and year — designed for Australian right-hand-drive vehicles — so it fits like factory with no trimming.
